Bicycle Injury Attorney in Plano
Plano has a number of off street multi-use paths for off-road bicyclists, and the city is in the process of implementing a system for on-road bicyclists including dedicated signs and routes. This new system mimics the U.S. interstate highway numbering system – odd numbers indicate north-south routes while even numbers are east-west. In addition, the numbers will increase as you move north or east; the smaller numbers are on the south and west sides of the city and increase as you move north or east, respectively.
This is great news for on-road bicyclists, particularly since off-road bicyclists have a 40 percent lower incidence of head, facial and dental injuries than on-road bicyclists do. This is primarily the result of being separated from bad drivers, vehicular traffic, and the increased use of helmets off-road. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that the two most common causes of bike accidents are falls and colliding with stationary objects. Additionally, bike accidents that involve motor vehicles are responsible for 10% of nonfatal injuries and 90% of all bicycle-related deaths. In fact, the CDC reported that 800 bicyclists were killed in 2010 alone while nearly 515,000 riders required some form of emergency care.

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationMinor bike-related accidents may result in abrasions, lacerations, or other superficial soft tissue injuries, while more serious injuries can include broken bones, full or partial skin thickness road rash, and head injuries that require immediate medical care. The following common bike injuries list symptoms in addition to common treatment.
- Abrasions, lacerations and superficial soft tissue injuries – these types of injuries are often considered to be minor soft tissue injuries that can often be taken care of at home by cleaning and bandaging the wound.
- Sprains and contusions – minor swelling, pain and bruising occur with this type of injury. Rest, ice, compression bandaging, and elevation (RICE) are the recommended treatment along with anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
- Ligament injuries – often considered sprains, ligament injuries can be serious and are graded on a severity scale of grade 1-3. Sprains that do not improve with RICE and NSAIDS may be indicative of a more serious ligament injury and further medical evaluation is recommended.
- Fractures – immediate pain, swelling and inability to use that area of the body may indicate a fracture has occurred. The most common fractures in bike accidents involve the hand, wrist, forearm, or shoulder. Treatment depends on which bone is involved, the amount of displacement, and whether the fracture is closed or open (when the bone breaks through skin).
- Full or partial skin thickness road rash – these injuries involve severe abrasions and will require debridement (removal of foreign material) at the hospital and may require surgical intervention.
- Head injuries – confusion, dizziness, loss of consciousness, double vision, sleepiness or severe headache can indicate a concussion, a brain contusion (bruising) or a hematoma (bleeding). These symptoms require immediate medical evaluation at a hospital.
