Bicycling has always been a favorite form of recreation for children, but in recent years more adults have migrated to cycling for the exercise benefits and as an inexpensive form of transportation. In fact, bicycle riding is an increasingly popular form of recreation for people of all ages and this is true in the Austin and Round Rock area too. Unfortunately, that increase in popularity results in an increase in bicycle related injuries, particularly those related to collisions with motor vehicles.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that 515,000 sustained bicycle-related injuries requiring emergency department care took place in 2010 and another 800 bicyclists were killed. More than half of these injuries and deaths involved children and adolescents under the age of 20.
