If your burn injury happened while on the job or as a result of someone else’s negligence, you may be eligible for compensation. In either of these cases, it is important for you to obtain a personal injury lawyer to assess the strength of your claim. If the defendant acted intentionally, you may also be able to obtain punitive damages.
An attorney may seek damages on your behalf for any of the following:
- Medical expenses (past and future)
- Compensation for physical and emotional pain
- Lost wages
- Wrongful death

Burn injuries are categorized by degrees, which depends both on the depth and severity of the injury. Whether or not you need to hire a lawyer after a burn injury may depend on the severity of the burn.
First-Degree Burn
This is the most minor type of burn in which the outer layer of the skin is burned but not all the way through. Symptoms that indicate this type of burn include red skin, swelling, and some pain associated with the burn. A sunburn is an example of this type of burn.
Second-Degree Burn
This type of burn occurs when the first layer of skin has burned and the second layer is also burned. Second-degree burns are accompanied by extremely red skin that could also appear splotchy. There may be blisters on the skin, and the pain and swelling is more severe than a first-degree burn.
Third-Degree Burn
This is the most serious type of burn and involves all layers of the skin. Permanent tissue damage may occur as a result of this type of burn. The following symptoms may indicate a third-degree burn:
- Black or charred skin
- Dry or white areas
- Fat, muscle or bone may be affected
- Difficulty breathing

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationWhat Should I Do After a Burn Injury?
Your highest priority after suffering a burn injury is to seek medical treatment immediately from a qualified physician. A doctor will be able to not only diagnose and treat your injury but also document the injury for future legal purposes. Even after your initial treatment, be sure to complete any ongoing therapy and attend all follow-up appointments as prescribed by your doctor.
In burn injury cases, it is imperative to document the injuries at every stage of the recovery process. This will be helpful in proving your claim. Any other physical evidence of the injuries should also be maintained. If possible, take photographs of the scene of the accident, get statements from any witnesses, and save any documents from your doctor, employer, and insurance company.
