Burn injuries are a serious problem in the United States. More than 450,000 people received treatment at hospitals for burn injuries in 2012 alone. While not all burns treated were of a serious nature, many were. According to the National Safety Council, of the 450,000 that sought treatment, 3,950 died as a result of their injuries. A majority of these deaths are the result of residential fires.
Burn injuries happen in many places: the home, at work, in construction accidents, and as a result of auto accidents. Many burn injuries result from fires, chemicals, sunburn, electricity, friction, and scalds.
- Fire – Can result from contact with a heat source or fire
- Chemical – Can result from contact or inhalation
- Sunburn – Can result in superficial injury to the outermost layer of skin
- Electrical – Can result from electrical current passing through the body
- Friction – Can result from something rubbing against the skin such as rug burn
- Scalding – Can result from exposure or contact with extremely hot water
A common source of injury comes from the improper use or storage of gas tanks attached to BBQ grills. And house explosions are more common than you might think, as are construction and work site explosions. Burns are also acquired when using flammable materials and common household and industrial chemicals. Often, burns can be readily treated at home, but more serious injuries will require medical attention. The types of burns and typical treatment include:
- First Degree – Minor pain or redness that is easily treatable at home
- Second Degree – Blisters and superficial damage to the area that may require medical attention
- Third Degree – Burning or charring that will require hospital treatment
- Fourth Degree – Injury to the underlying skin and structure that will require admission to a burn unit often including surgery and skin grafts
