Plano, TX Child Abuse Attorney
Statistics show that one in four girls and one in six boys in the state of Texas will be abused before the age of eighteen, and only one in ten will report it. Child abuse is an insidious condition of our society and it flourishes in secrecy. That is why it is so important to speak up if you see or suspect a child is the victim of child abuse. Children are the most vulnerable of our society and they need to keep an ever watchful eye on them to keep them safe.
Child abuse can lead to many psychological problems including nightmares, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, depression, self esteem issues, addictive behavior, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder to name just a few. Unfortunately, children who have been abused often have difficulty forming and maintaining relationships as adults due to the lack of attachment they experienced in their childhood

It is defined by the Centers for Disease Control as any act or series of acts that results in harm, potential harm, or threat of harm to a child, while neglect is defined as the failure to meet the basic needs of the child including food, clothing, housing and medical care. Child abuse is categorized in four major areas: physical, sexual, psychological or emotional abuse, and neglect, and may include any of the following symptoms or indications of abuse:
- Physical abuse – physical aggression directed at a child by an adult that causes physical injury. Indications of physical abuse include bruising, scratching, breaking bones, lacerations, burns, repeated mishaps or injuries, rough treatment, multiple injuries at one time, or broken bones at different stages of healing.
- Sexual abuse – a sexual act with a child for the physical gratification or financial profit of another, abuse of a child for sexual stimulation, or urging / pressuring a child to engage in some form of sexual act. Indications of sexual abuse include indecent exposure; the display of pornography; or viewing or contact with the child’s genitalia.
- Emotional abuse – psychologically abnormal behavior directed at a child. Indications of emotional abuse include denigration, harsh criticism, coarse or rude attitude or insults, yelling, humiliation, destruction of personal property, or the torture or killing of a beloved pet.
- Neglect – failure of the parent or caretaker to provide necessities such as food, shelter, medical care, clothing or adequate supervision to a degree that the child’s health or safety is threatened. Neglect is also lack of attention, love and nurturing. Indications of neglect include frequent absences from school, a dirty or bedraggled child, insufficient clothing for the weather, begging/stealing food, and the lack of adequate medical or dental care.
