Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is rare, but it is becoming more common. It affects the mesothelium, which is the thin membrane the lines the organs inside of the body. This condition is caused by exposure to asbestos. Most people will not notice any symptoms of this condition until several years after they have been exposed to asbestos.
Pleural, pericardial, peritoneal and tunica vaginalis are the different forms of mesothelioma. Pleural is by far the most common type of this condition. In fact, 70 percent of people who have this condition are diagnosed with the pleural form. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lung lining, which is also known as the pleura. Peritoneal affects the abdominal cavity living, and pericardial affects the tissue that lines the heart.
Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis is the least common. Less than one percent of patients with this condition will be diagnosed with mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis. The tunica vaginalis is the membrane pouch that covers the testicles.

Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationPeople who have been exposed to asbestos need to contact a physician who diagnoses and treats mesothelioma as soon as possible. If this condition is diagnosed in its early stages, then the patient will have better treatment options. The type and stage of the cancer are two of the biggest factors that determine the type of treatment that is recommended.
Surgery can be performed if the cancer is diagnosed in its early stages. In some cases, the cancer can be cured with surgery. However, it is important to note that surgery may not be able to remove all of the cancer.
Radiation therapy is another treatment option for mesothelioma. It may be recommended if the cancer has spread. Radiation therapy may also be recommended after surgery in order to prevent the mesothelioma from spreading.
Chemotherapy helps slow the growth and shrink the cancer. It involves using chemicals to destroy the malignant cells. Furthermore, researchers are currently performing clinical trials in order to test the effectiveness of new drugs. They are hoping that these drugs can be used in the future.
