Available 24 / 7|Free ConsultationIs working in the oil fields dangerous?
Working in the oil fields can be a dangerous profession. Oil field workers must work in extreme weather conditions, operate dangerous machinery, work long hours, and are often exposed to hazardous chemicals. In fact, in 2017 alone, there were 69 fatalities as reported by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Three of these fatalities occurred in New Mexico.
Further, those who suffered fatalities were between 21 and 30 years old. Also, those who worked in the industry for less than one year were more likely to be killed, although industry experience was unknown in the majority of these cases. These fatalities occurred in a number of ways, including:
- Fluid transportation

Available 24 / 7|Free Consultationhow to prevent injuries in the oil and gas industry
Although working in the oil fields will always be dangerous, there are certain steps that can be taken to lessen the likelihood of certain accidents occurring, such as slips and falls. Slip and falls account for about 23% of worker injuries and 36% of fatalities in the oil and gas industry. According to Occupational Health & Safety, there are three steps that can be utilized to reduce slip and fall accidents and subsequent injuries. These steps include maintenance and good housekeeping, environmental constraints, and use of personal protective equipment. They are discussed in more detail below:

Although it may be difficult to constantly keep all tools and equipment in good working condition, it Is extremely important to do so. This is especially true considering oil and gas fields operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Failure to maintain and repair pumps, valves, and fittings may result in leaks, which, in turn, create puddles on walking surfaces. Further, lack of hydraulic system maintenance may result in their failure to perform, creating spills and releasing fluids under high pressure.
Proper housekeeping is also important, as pumps, grease recovery units, pump trucks, and other onsite machinery have a tendency to leak. This results in the equipment, as well as the areas around the equipment, to be covered in oil and grease. Failure to routinely clean this area may result in a hazardous working situation. In addition, tools, equipment, cords, cables, and other supplies should always be kept in toolboxes or other designated areas to prevent tripping hazards. If you or a loved one has been injured in an oil field due to a lack of equipment or workplace maintenance, contact Zinda Law Group as soon as possible.

Available 24 / 7|Free Consultation2. Use of Environmental Constraints
There are strict environmental regulations that compel oil and gas companies to avoid polluting. Further, a crucial feature of oil and gas exploration, drilling, and refining sites is a secondary containment system to prevent liquids from escaping the sites. These containment systems surround all tools, equipment, and supplies, creating a giant pool. These systems are made to capture spills, rainwater, and snowmelt.
Secondary containment systems also protect the environment by safeguarding it against hazardous pollutants. However, these systems also contribute to slippery puddles and leaks. In this case, well pad operators have the ability to slope the entire pad, so the water is able to drain and collect at one end. This allows for proper management of the liquids. Some oil and gas sites will further drain these liquids into a retention pond.
Regardless of the method, it is important to remove any standing water at the sites. This will help to prevent many slip and fall injuries. If you have slipped and fallen due to the lack of liquid management, contact a Zinda Law Group personal injury attorney to discuss your unique case.
3. Use of Personal Protective Equipment
There are a variety of personal protective equipment that can help prevent slip and fall accidents in oil field sites. As it is difficult to keep well pad liners dry 24/7, especially when it is raining or snowing, slip-resistant footwear may be used. This footwear will need to meet a number of other safety factors, such as fire resistance ratings, safety toes, and steel shanks. Further, stay away from ice cleats unless raised grates or platforms are being used at the site, as cleats can cause rips and tears when used directly on a well pad liner. Be sure to always use the proper personal protective equipment. If you have still been injured at an oil field site, contact one of Zinda Law Group’s experienced oil field accidents lawyers today.
Slip and fall hazards are just one of the many risks oil and gas workers face on a daily basis. Identifying these problems and taking the above steps can help to keep workers safe while on the job. If you have any further questions regarding these steps, or would like to discuss your unique workplace injury, contact Zinda Law Group today. We are here to help investigate your case and determine whether or not negligent maintenance was the underlying cause of your accident.
New Mexico’s concerns with methane pollution
In 2021, oil and gas companies spilled approximately 658,000 gallons of oil in New Mexico’s environment. These pollutants came from 1,368 total spills, which is a record number, according to the Center for Western Priorities. This study also indicated that billions of cubic feet of methane were released into the air at the same time of the oil spills.
In order to address pollution concerns, the State of New Mexico has adopted new rules for the Energy, Minerals and National Resources Department, and for the New Mexico Environment Department. These new rules include outlawing liquid and gaseous spills, increased gas capture standards, emission reporting, and retrofitting requirements for equipment at oil and gas facilities in an effort to reduce environmental impact. The Energy, Minerals and National Resources Department’s rules also includes a ban on routine flaring, which is the practice of burning excess gas.
Additionally, New Mexico officials are also looking for more efficient ways to detect and measure oil field emissions and to keep these emissions within legal limits. A Moriarty based company, Sceye Inc., has taken on this task.
Sceye Inc. is a material science company whose mission is to connect and protect this planet from the stratosphere. Sceye Inc. has developed a helium airship that hovers the stratosphere approximately 65,000 feet above the Earth. This airship has spectral imagers and laser sensors to scan emissions within a meter of the emission source. The airship, which is a partnership between Sceye Inc., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Environment and Economic Development departments, is still in the testing phase. The goal is to have the airship operational by the year 2023.
Furthermore, methane is one of the most significant drivers of climate change. In fact, methane has trapped approximately 30 times as much heat as carbon dioxide in the past 100 years. Further, the oil and natural gas industry is the largest industrial source of methane emissions. New Mexico’s regulations and airship are, therefore, necessary for the detection and reduction of this dangerous gas.
If you have any other questions regarding New Mexico’s methane regulations, or have otherwise been harmed from oil field spills, pollutants, or hazards, contact one of our experienced oil field accident lawyers at Zinda Law Group as soon as possible. Our team can help you through each step of the legal process to get you the compensation you deserve for your injuries.
